Being so far from my mom has been a different experience than I imagined…

At first, it was to gain independence (even though I was too independent) and because I thought it was time. You know, the 18-year-old girl going to college and wanting an adventure.

It was kind of nice, like a breath of fresh air.

But then, it morphed into something I can’t really explain.

Within a few weeks, I felt like I was lost and that was something completely unexpected. I moved to a city where I didn’t know anybody and I had nothing to do but work and homework…

I missed my best friend.

I missed my mom.

Here I am, 3 years later, and my life is changing every day. I’m still in college, I’m still working like crazy, and I still miss her every day.

We talk on the phone every other day, sharing our highs and lows of our day to day life and it’s normal.

I try to visit her 3x a year (it’s more like 2 but hey, I tried!) and this may sound crazy but I love that I visit her those few times. She doesn’t and she thinks I don’t love her (cue the dramatic eye roll) but in those few times I go down to Miami, I actually cherish the time I spend with her.

I look forward to the huge hug at the airport, when we get to her house and she makes me yummy food, or when we lay in bed and just watch our favorite show together. I get to keep those memories and save them for when I miss her terribly.

She still doesn’t get it and tries to guilt trip me to move back (hasn’t worked yet) but I know it’s just because she loves me!

So for this mother’s day, I’ve decided to make her something extra special and surprise her at her job!

I wanted to make her something that stood out and showed her how much I cared. I went on a hunt (okay, I just surfed through Pinterest for a few hours…) and searched for DIY mother’s day gifts to find crafts to inspire me.

Being that her job is working with kids (she’s a preschool teacher), she is totally into what the kids are loving these days, which means unicorns. So, between the teacher thing and the mom thing, she LOVES homemade crafts made from the heart.

It was perfect.

Here’s how it came out!

Here is the template for the unicorn card.

First, cut the card-front and card-back from the template (you can find this above) Make sure you cut inside the black border lines.

Use the white paper scraps from the template to cut a piece of paper to 5.5” x 2”. You will use this to bind the card-front to the card-back.

Cut two pieces of glitter gold cardstock to 5.5” x 5.5”.

Make the card your own!

Here’s how I decorated the front but you don’t have to do it the same way. Add colors your loved one likes or jazz it up and make it your very own special unicorn.

Glue the large flower to the center using glitter glue and add the gem to the inside of the large flower.

Add the remaining flowers with gold glitter glue and add dots of glitter to the inside of each flower to give each a little sparkle.
